The Sunday Stroll: 2 October, 2011

October 2, 2011

Déjà vu? Fernando Torres, oh dear…

The longest header in football history? Scoring from your own half with your noggin – impressive feat Jone Samuelsen…

Less impressive is this ludicrous over-the-top reaction by Sevilla’s Emir Spahić…

And less impressive still was the reported conduct of Carlos Tévez who supposedly refused to come on as a sub for Man City during their loss to Munich. He’s denied it, citing a language-barrier based error in communication with manager Robert Mancini, but the Argentinian has still been suspended by his club pending an investigation…

I’ve seen some fans celebrate in strange ways before, but this takes some beating…

And to sadder news, the scorer of this famous backheeled penalty, UAE’s Theyab Awana, sadly died in a car accident recently…

In cycling, well – what can we say other than: MARK CAVENDISH YOU LEGEND! Cav became World Champion after a ‘mind-blowing‘ ride by his GB teammates – a truly spectacular performance and one he rightly praised them for: ‘the team were incredible and it’s a shame that those guys can’t have the [rainbow] jersey, too. I was part of an incredible eight-man machine today. The calibre of these guys is amazing and I’m super-proud of them.’ For Cav though it caps a spectacular year, with yet more Tour de France stage victories and the much-vaunted Green Jersey to boot. Our vote for Sports Personality of the Year…

Mind you, he’s clearly not perfect (who is?). Here’s Cav slipping on the podium for the 2008 Scheldeprijs Vlaanderen (the Flanders Classic)…

F1 visited Singapore last weekend. Yep, Vettel won again, but the real drama surrounded Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa. Hamilton clipped Massa mid-race giving the Brazilian a puncture and ruining his evening. In the press area afterwards, Massa got a tad aggressive about what we’re pretty sure was an unfortunate and innocuous racing incident (albeit one of many for Hamilton this season…). We would rather see Hamilton try to race and not get it quite right than Massa’s approach, which is to pootle around the track slower than your teammate race after race…

Just in case any blokes out there were unsure of the rules of rugby, a traditionally steely sport, then here’s a cheeky guide to the finer points of the game from Lynx. Lovely stuff…

And here’s a totally flawless – and very amusing – explanation of how and why rugby will become a success in Brazil…

Meanwhile in the RWC, England took on Scotland yesterday and sent the Scots home, thanks to this 77th-minute try from Chris Ashton (see below). Once again though, England had failed to impress, and it is tough to see how’ll they’ll beat Ireland (or Wales) in the semis, let alone New Zealand, Australia or South Africa in the final…

On your head, son…

An excellent rescue FROM THE WATER for par by Bill Haas…

And to finish, we leave you with a few clips from the FIFA12 demo, showing that the new player impact engine might need a little tweaking. Bloody hilarious though…

As ever folks, all the best and thanks for reading…
